There are different levels of editing, contrary to popular belief. It is important to apply the correct type of editing in relation to where the author feels the text is in the writing process. At the beginning of the writing process, focusing on grammar and other surface features is not helpful. That's a late-stage activity that polishes up a text that is already well-constructed.
