The eight page book is a simple way of turning a standard 8.5x11 piece of paper into a small book. You can use a larger piece of paper and get a larger book if you want. Students can then write their own books and illustrate them.

Has a video for how to fold and cut. This link is also to a form of the eight page book that is an organizer and calendar. You can personalize your organizer and then print it out. This would be an example of using writing for real purposes--students can create these and use them to keep track of upcoming events, their school schedule, homework, projects, and so forth. It would be good for a teacher to provide several weeks of leadership with these things (reminding students to write in their organizer, having discussions about how the organizer works, etc.) and then it may be possible for students to use this tool independently to keep track of the things they need to do.
