Test Taking Strategies

REALLY IMPORTANT: SUCCESSFUL PRAXIS II TAKERS USE THE STRATEGY FOR CONSTRUCTED RESPONSES LISTED ON THIS PAGE, SO BE SURE TO READ THOSE. CONTACT CAROLYN OSBORNE (cosborn2@capital.edu) IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR WANT A CRITIQUE OF A SAMPLE ANSWER YOU HAVE WRITTEN.

Suggested Test-Taking Process

The purpose of this strategy is to make use of the brain's ability to retrieve answers when you give it the proper stimulation and some time.
Go through the multiple choice questions quickly, answering the ones you are sure of.
Go to the first scenario for constructed response. Read the questions related to that scenario and then read the scenario. Answer those questions (don't spend a bunch of time if you are stuck--come back).
Go through the multiple choice again. Probably you'll find some more you can answer with confidence.
Go back and forth between multiple choice and constructed response because each type of question will trigger thoughts that will help you answer as you proceed through the test.
Left-over time--make sure constructed responses are complete and the parts are marked very clearly.

Writing Constructed Responses

Remember that you do not have time to write a lot on constructed responses. The question generally asks for two of something (strategies, suggestions, etc.) and for each answer the reasons why these would be good strategies, etc. So here is an effective way to write these:

The question asks for two strategies. Below is the whole answer.

1. The first strategy I suggest is blah blah blah. This would be an appropriate strategy because blah blah blah

2. The second strategy I suggest is blah blah blah. This would be an appropriate strategy because blah blah blah

Use this format so that you don't waste time. This format works and it will help you to save time to get everything else done.

Want a GREAT testing center for your tests?

Prometric Testing Center
933 High Street
Suite 130 B
United States Of America
43085
6144312083

Students who have taken tests here have nothing but good things to say about this testing center. The staff are laid back and friendly and the center is not heavily crowded with other test takers. The center is located in a small strip mall that almost looks like an appartment building. It has a small waiting room and lovely bathroom that are all very relaxing, so if you get there early feel free to go inside instead of building up anxiety while waiting in your car!
