Where are our visitors from?

How to Use This Wiki for Ed 213, Ed 214, and Ed 314/316

You have two major wikis to use in these classes. The literacymethods wiki contains content, and lots of it. It includes a lot of topics related to literacy, as might be expected, and it also contains information about many creative/art-based projects. There is a significant element of technology here, too. Just look at the list of pages to see the kinds of information you can find here. Think of it as your own personal Wikipedia. You are invited to add information that will benefit your colleagues and your teachers. This is our semioticstextbook, and your voice can be part of it.



The other wiki is your portfolio wiki. This is where you document what you have done in class, whether it is reflections, art works, thoughts, etc. You need a FREE account from wikispaces.com in order to fully edit your page. PLEASE MAKE SURE ANYTHING YOU UPLOAD HAS A UNIQUE NAME (E.G., YOUR NAME AND THE TOPIC). Otherwise, if someone else uploads a picture or document with the same name, it will replace yours and you will be frustrated.

Tobie and I are working on a grant and we found an interesting document on how to write a good grant. It's posted under "Grant Writing" on this wiki.

Emergent Curriculum
What? You mean every learning experience is not necessarily planned in advance???? Take a look at the video overview. How would you describe an emergent We think that an emergent curriculum can be powerful in a university setting. What do you think? Can you think of a time you learned deeply because a teacher or other person supported your intellectual, social, emotional or other interests? Did the environment matter? Were relationships influential? Was it necessary for you to finish what you started, even if your interests moved elsewhere?

The Bed Brigade!


The Bed Brigade, a mission of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grove City, is an effort to give beds to those who don't have a bed to call their own in the Central Ohio area.

What difference does a word make? Vocabulary! Vocabulary! Vocabulary!

When you begin your field experience next month, you may find that your cooperating teacher has a strong way of building the students' vocabulary both in terms of academic language words like compare, contrast, synthesize, analyze, organize, replicate, etc. and rich content vocabulary (terms like genus, incubation, atmosphere, monarchy), Please spend some of your time in the field figuring out useful ways to expand the students' vocabulary even more while you are in the classroom. vocabulary building might be a juicy topic for your research project. While learning about the Orton-Gillingham Approach to Reading, a teaching friend told me about The Phonics Dance, which is a pretty motivating, way to teach explicit phonics for word decoding.
