Through the class Writing Theory and Methods I feel more comfortable with teaching students how to troubleshoot when they are challenged by the writing process. My understanding of the writing process is based on direct work with teaching students on the autism spectrum how to organize their writing. Some methods I have used in the past to assist students in organizing their writing are graphic organizers, drawing pictures, brainstorming with peers and/or teachers (both verbally or through writing), checklists for steps in the writing process. Additionally, in the class Writing Theory and Methods I learned about how to create rubrics and guidelines for students to follow so they could increase their independence in completing a written assignment. I also feel comfortable with using writing workshops after reading the textbook for Writing Theory and Methods and by observing teachers in multiple grade levels use some form of writing workshop.
